Plattekill: The Pull

As ski season moves into spring, I have to admit, I get weary of the driving. I worry I’ll sleep through the alarm, because secretly I want to sleep in. Ultimately, I answer the call because, as tired as I am, I know I’ll be jazzed, when I arrive at the mountain.

Spring presents me with another related challenge. In the same way migratory birds are compelled to take predetermined routes at predetermined times, I can’t escape my drive to be on the first chair. Even in the spring, when it might not make any sense, I can’t seem to help it.

My plan is to arrive an hour before lifts spin. This gives me extra time to get stuck in a little traffic, or slow down if conditions are snowy.

Snow Ridge: A Day at The Beach

This year I’ve really come to appreciate Snow Ridge. I was already a big fan, but this year I really got to know the hill. I’ve been fortunate over the years to ride with some well versed locals and even Nick Mir himself, but this year I explored on my own.

I went deeper into the Snow Pocket than ever before and like Thoreau on a snowboard, came out a new man. All that sweet powder I rode earlier in the season was now part of a deep base. When Snow Ridge announced its pond skim for Sunday, I called Alex and he grabbed his towel. With temperatures in the upper 50’s we headed to the beach. The sun was already blistering when we were gearing up in the lot.

Mount Peter: Spring into Action

Skiers have an ambiguous attitude towards springtime. When the weather turns warm around this time of year, we know that ski season will end soon. On the other hand, spring skiing is tons of fun.

That’s why, last week, when the snow in my front yard disappeared, I wasn’t despondent.

I admit I was jealous of the people who were able to get away midweek to make some spring turns while I worked. My social media was filled up with pictures of people skiing soft bumps and corn snow under the warm sun. Mixed in with the jealousy was excitement at the prospect of getting after some awesome spring turns myself.
