Hunt Hollow: Berms, Bruises and Brews 2

For the second year in a row, snowboarders across New York gathered on a dreary spring morning at the Hunt Hollow Ski Club. They walked through the rain and mud, six packs in hand, to enter Berms, Bruises and Brews 2. The snowboarding community came to celebrate the sport we love.

As I walked to the lodge Saturday morning, it felt more like a family reunion than a race meet. I was greeted by loads of familiar faces including those from my home mountain, Woods Valley. The Woods crew was already geared up in the lot and ready to go when I arrived. At the sign-in table Dan from Flour City Distribution was running the show and Joe the Hunt Hollow GM was greeting the riders as they streamed in.

Hunt Hollow: Berms, Bruises and Brews

I walked through the early morning fog into Hunt Hollows main lodge with a six pack in hand. The beer was part of the registration fee for “Berms, Bruises and Brews” an all snowboard banked race event.

The divisions were separated by decades and the top 3 fastest of each division took home a portion of the beer. Part of the money raised was also being donated to upgrade the park at Hunt Hollow.

After registering I caught up with Alex who had already taken a few runs. The visibility was not great, as fog eclipsed the upper 3/4 of the mountain. We rode down Fox run and dipped onto the course to check it out.

Hunt Hollow: A Glimpse of the Good Life

Growing up in the Finger Lakes I had always heard of Hunt Hollow hidden away in the hills of Naples. The idea of a private ski club is certainly alluring, so when family scored guests passes, I had to bite.

My dad and Alex were equally excited, despite living less than half an hour away none of us had ever been there. We dried our clothes from pond skimming the day before at Bristol and loaded up first thing Sunday morning.

I’ve been lucky with the weather this season and Sunday was no exception. On the drive over we were greeted with a heavy snow squall and the road was covered from the nights previous snowfall. Pulling into the parking lot was like flicking a switch, the clouds dispersed and the sun came out.
