Killington: The Beast for Beginners

For someone who’s been skiing the Northeast for 25 years, I have an embarrassing admission – until this week, I’d never skied at Killington. The biggest ski area east of the Rockies, a place that looms large in every East Coaster’s mental map, had always been on my list, but somehow never happened.

I’d skied nearby at Pico, read countless trip reports, articles, and lively forum threads about Big K, but never experienced it firsthand. That finally changed last week, though not in the way I would’ve expected, as my family’s four-day road trip to Vermont was designed for my son, who hadn’t been on skis in nearly seven years.

Grace Camp Gauntlet

Mother Nature’s treated us well this season — cold temperatures and plentiful storms — but as of late she’s been in a foul mood. In a repeat of last year’s March, the beginning of the month came with a brutal warmfront, this time with a stretch of highs in the 60s as well as a week of rain that totaled multiple inches.

Garden Trailhead

Most of the state suffered tremendously, with most of the natural snow (besides parking lot piles) disappearing overnight. Even the snowpack in the High Peaks of the Adirondack Park, which stacked consistently for 3 months, became practically nonexistent at the trailhead.
