Snow Ridge: A Classic Indy Rise Up

There’s been some excitement about the eastern ski season getting an early start. Ski Ward in Massachusetts garnered significant attention with its new snowmaking system, claiming the first open ski resort in North America. Killington spun early as always. Belleayre got out first in New York with a sneak preview before Thanksgiving.

Those efforts may pale in comparison to the work done at Snow Ridge, a family-owned resort on Tug Hill. In August, as most resorts were completing lift maintenance and inspection, Turin NY came into the path of an EF-3 tornado. Trees were snapped and lifts were rendered inoperable.

Holiday Mountain Crunch Time

If you’re connected to New York skiing, it’s been hard to miss the blizzard of activity at Holiday Mountain, following the acquisition of the property by the Bridgeville Ski Company, in May.  Leading the effort is Mike Taylor. He was born in Monticello NY and grew up skiing the hill.

I drove up on Sunday to meet with Mike and see it for myself.  We met in the outer lot, near the North Lodge and the Fun Park. Mike was driving a red Jeep Wrangler that would prove integral to our tour. The volume of work-in-progress inspired a million questions and Mike had the answers. I’ve got two stories to tell, first the backstory.

TGR Films: Legend Has It

It’s that time of year again, winter is so close you can taste it. It’s time to go wax and sharpen your skis. Find your goggles, gloves and balaclavas. Dump last year’s dirt out of your boot bag. Check to see what needs to be replaced, what needs to be tossed in washing machine.

And it’s time to get your head in the right space. It’s time to get stoked. The best way I can think of to do that is to show up at a ski movie. There are a handful of production companies out there making ski movies and doing theater tours. Not all of them make it to the New York area but Teton Gravity Research does.
