Standing Sideways Plattekill Takeover

The chance of precipitation was almost as high as the stoke on Saturday at the Standing Sideways Plattekill Takeover. For the fifth year in a row riders all across the North East came together to share their passion for snowboarding and support an awesome cause in the Live Like Brent Foundation (LLBF). LLBF was started by Brent Evans during his fight with Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma.

Cancer is one of the leading causes of bankruptcy. LLBF works to raise awareness and funds for those going through blood cancer treatment. Brent was an avid rider and what started as Carve4Cancer has blossomed into a larger organization.

Ode to Otis Ridge

In the south-central Berkshire mountains of Massachusetts on a northeast facing slope you will find Otis Ridge. On any given weekend day, we depart for the hill from our house in Bridgeport, CT. Our kids — Oscar and Rita — both race for Otis, Kristin and I bring them to ski practice.

AKA a free ski for us, with some time spent helping to set up gates and slip the course for the team. An hour and a half after leaving home, we pull into the gravel lot across the street from the hill. The kids have already booted up on the ride and are ready to go. Mom and Dad take a little while longer, so the kids go ahead and we will see them later (they love the independence).

Peek’n Peak: Think Snow

Packing my ski gear Tuesday morning, I knew a good day was ahead. There was a beautiful sunrise to start the day that gave way to clear visibility for the drive to Clymer, NY. It was an early start to a long, but fun day. I had plans to meet my friends Kyle and Mike at Peek’n Peak later in the morning. We love PnP’s terrain park and it was the focus of our trip.

Peek’n Peak Main Lodge

My first visit to Peek’n Peak was eight years ago via I-86. This time I came on I-90 with views of Lake Erie and vines from the Wine Country Trail. I arrived 30 minutes before opening, to a near empty parking lot. I expected it to be a busy day during a holiday break, at a mountain so close to Erie PA. But the only line I saw all day was at the ticket window.
