Jay Peak: All the Way

Few things compare to sharing a cabin in the mountains with friends. When the call for an early season trip came, I had to answer. The mountain was Jay Peak and it’s been on my bucket list for too long.

The weather looked ominous, but I’d caught Face of Winter earlier in the week at the Stanley and I was more than a little hyped to get up to Vermont. After five hours in the car we found ourselves in the “Fun Haus” complete with wood-fired hot tub and Mardi Gras deer head above the toilet.

It was hard to sleep. Friday morning we drove 10 minutes to the mountain, getting glimpses of the Jay through the trees. Several inches of snow had fallen during the week and warm temperatures meant the snow would be soft.

Return to Magic

I was conflicted about this trip. I wanted to ski the snow from the most recent winter storm before it got wet. On the other hand, I could only ski Friday, and it felt like a lot of gas for one guy to burn for a day. I was looking at my options: Magic and Gore.

Both mountains are just about the same distance from me, and frankly they are beyond the reach of a reasonable day trip. Magic reported 16-23 inches of snow from the last storm. Gore reported 14 inches, and they measure at the base, so the numbers looked comparable. Snow reporting aside, from the radar I saw, it looked like SoVT got several hours of snowfall after it shut down in New York.

Mad River Glen Midweek Pow Day

Mad River Glen Single ChairHow many phenomenal ski days do you get in a year? Maybe you’re saying something like “every day is a phenomenal day”, and that’s a nice attitude, but you have to agree that some days are better than others.

I’m talking about the special days, the ones that you remember for years. The ones with all the ingredients. Snow. Lots of snow. Fresh, open fields of powder. No lift lines. Nothing to do but ski.

I got to Mad River Glen a bit before 10am on Wednesday and found about 50 cars in the parking lot. I bought a “Mad Pass” with 3 transferrable lift tickets (might have to come back this weekend), and jumped on the single chair.
