Fast Tracks: Say It Ain’t So Killy

Killington is a big resort. It’s got everything that label implies; hotels, condos, detachable lifts, fancy restaurants. It’s owned by a large corporation, Powdr, that exists to make money. In that respect it’s like all the other big commercialized ski resorts in Vermont — Okemo, Stratton or Mt Snow. Still, somehow, Killington always felt different.

Killington is open

Killington has so much terrain, tons of tree skiing and lots of nooks and crannies, you can get lost and pretend you’re not at the biggest ski resort on the east coast. Killington hosts the World Cup and the Bear Mountain Mogul Challenge and one of the best party scenes in Vermont. It opens earliest and closes last almost every winter. Sometimes Killington makes it to June 1st, which can’t possibly make economic sense.

Interview: Nick Mir of Snow Ridge

Snow Ridge logoCyndy Sisto and Nick Mir have worked in the ski business in Central NY for decades.

In 2015, the mother and son team bought Snow Ridge on the eastern edge of the Tug Hill Plateau and have been working to take the ski area to the next level. This summer the resort has been especially busy hosting annual events like the Lovely Time Music and Arts Festival and the TugMudDare Run. A new disc golf course and skate bowl has been built, and recently the resort announced new mountain bike trails.

We tracked down Nick to learn more about him, work done this off season and plans for the ski area.

The Queen of the Catskills

Queen of the CatskillsWe’d never known of Julie McGuire until the pandemic changed everything. All of a sudden it seemed she was all over Facebook ski groups like Ski the East and Skiology posting pictures of the Catskill backcountry, sharing adventures, stoke and her love for great beer. Based in the Hudson Valley, with a thing for Bearpen, she became known as The Queen of the Catskills, with a t-shirt to prove it.

Her irrepressible smile, open-book approach to her own personal struggles and unquenchable thirst for adventure are unique and hard to ignore. When she let it slip that she had the Haute Route on her resume, we reached out to interview her.
