Access issues have hampered recreational enthusiasts dreams of enjoying the outside world across the country the last few decades, but the NY metro area is on its way to claiming a new victory.

Much like the North Brooklyn Boat Club, another community group has organized to fight the bureaucracy and cut red tape. The area in question — dubbed “The Powerlinez” due to the proximity to the massive and popping electricity towers that traverse the area — has long held the interest of local climbers. But the Palisades Interstate Park Commission or PIPC kept the area off limits due to liability and trail use concerns.

The Ski Season in Photos #10

In the first half of March the season came to a make-or-break point.  While skiers were already far ahead of the previous winter when the season was all but done by the Ides of March, there was really nothing stellar about the 2012-13 season. Yet.

On March 12, yet another warm system brought a hard bring rain as far north as Whiteface. But optimistic skiers held on to hope as another storm forecast for early the following week looked like it might be cold or at least cold enough.

On March 18 — a Sunday night — the storm arrived in the Catskills bringing snow that evening and then rain the following morning. But by midday on Monday even in New York’s southern mountains the precipitation turned back to something white and left the few who had ventured out smiling.

North Country Hardship Fund and Wayne Stock VI

Once again the North Country Hardship Fund presents Wayne Stock at the Ski Bowl in North Creek. The annual, BYO, rain or shine, blockbuster fundraising event with free entry, auctions, raffles, food and non-stop music is on August 3 from 12 noon to 11pm.

The North Country Hardship Fund is a not-for-profit organization that started with a benefit in 2008 called Wayne Stock. The original event was designed to raise funds for Wayne Bukovinsky who needed help after a serious accident.

Before that time Wayne was living the life, part of a great community, surrounded by friends and family. He found the love of his life in high school. He joined the Navy, traveled abroad and raised two children. After leaving the military, he pursued the career of his dreams — a “Road Dawg” — traveling with major title bands listening to the music that came to define him.
