Spring Skiing at Hunter …in December

Hunter is renowned for breeding a certain type of expert skier that can slash moguls and carve ice, skills born of the fickle NY ski season and the steeps of West and K-27.

I don’t think I really fit those stereotypes. But when I noticed a forecast with highs in the 40s, I knew that Wednesday would be my first day at Hunter this year. A delicious corn harvest on admittedly limited terrain.

It’s rare for me to wait so long to get to Tannersville because Hunter has the firepower and to get to 100 percent open faster than any mountain in the east.

Catskills Winter Sampler Card

Catskills Winter Sampler CardIt was announced last night that the major ski resorts in the Catskills have entered into a joint promotion for the 2012/2013 skiing and riding season.

The Catskills Winter Sampler Card will cost $199 and includes one unrestricted adult lift ticket valid any day of the upcoming season at each of four premier winter ski and snowboard destinations in the Northern Catskills: Hunter Mountain, Windham Mountain, Belleayre and Plattekill Mountain. In the next few weeks the card will be available online at CatskillsWinterSampler.com.

Time Travel to the Summit of Rusk Mountain

Maybe I’ve seen the Last of the Mohicans one too many times: it seems I’m now obsessed with local lore and the “old days.” On a recent canoe trip down the Delaware I couldn’t stop talking about the Lenape Indians, their travel routines and dress. And on a hike up the highest mountain in Orange County NY, I drove my companions nuts detailing the meaning of the word Schunemunk.

Actually I’ve always been fond of remembering the time when men were men, and hiking meant figuring out how to get from point Algonquin to point British without the use of marked trails.
