Hickory Hill Hike

On August 3, Hickory Ski Center’s Facebook page woke from a slumber that began in October of 2017. The message: “we’re having a party on Saturday August 14. Come support Hickory.” Further down in the comments they dropped the big one: “There’s more exciting news to come!”

Those still following that long dormant page, jumped right to the most exciting possibility, that Hickory was planning to reopen. Later when placeholder copy and one of our pictures was added to the Hickory’s website, my anticipation grew.

Hickory faces hurdles. Beyond the logistics required to open any ski area, it will take some weather magic to open a rocky hill without snowmaking, at 700 feet, in Warrensburg NY.

Indy Pass adds West Mountain

Indy Pass logoToday, the Indy Pass announced the addition of three new ski areas to their lineup, bringing the total number of hills on the pass to 66. All of the resorts who participated this season are returning for the 21/22 season.

“The addition of Powder Mountain, Mt. Ashland and West Mountain will have Indy Pass holders from coast-to-coast jumping for joy”, said Indy Pass founder Doug Fish.

With the addition of West Mountain — located near the southeastern edge of New York’s Adirondack Mountains — passholders will now have access to five resorts in New York: Catamount, Greek Peak, Swain Resort and more recently added Snow Ridge round out the list.

Gore Mountain Easter Monday

I’ve been skiing weekdays this season. Obviously crowds are lighter, and it takes some juggling to manage work responsibilities. One loophole, our small company grants a lessor known holiday, Easter Monday. I headed to Gore.

It worked out pretty well. I had a 3-day weekend with the family then, after Easter dinner on Sunday, I drove north to our cabin in the Adirondacks. I’d forgotten how weird it feels to load your skis into your car when it’s 65 degrees and sunny.

When you get into the mountains, it starts to make sense again. There was little natural snow around, mostly just plow snow, but hey, I was in the mountains. Normally, if you’re not rolling in at say midnight, you can see the bumps on Rumor as you approach from the south on Route 28.
