Gore Mountain and the Valentine’s Day Storm 2007

Valentine's Day Storm 2007The Valentine’s Day Storm plowed through the southern Adirondacks early in the week. We arrived in North River after the storm, and it was a great time to be there. Initially we had trouble getting to the cabin as our plow guy certainly had his hands full. We measured 40 inches, and walking the 500 feet to our camp from the road in waist high snow took 20 minutes the first time. In addition, power outages led to plumbing issues.

Sat 2/17 was the first time I can remember the mountain turning people away because of lack of parking, and still I never felt remotely close to crowded on the trails or in the trees.

Ski Days 11, 12, 13 and 14

Gore Mountain was great this weekend.

It’s great having it open. On Friday they opened Lower Steilhang and Lower Darby. I hope they never widen any of the trails over there.

Ski Days 8, 9 and 10

I’m new at the trip reporter game, and not the greatest with details. As Leo Kottke once said “I’ll give ya what I got.”

All three days, coverage on any thing that was open was good — no rocks and a nice surface. Hard but no ice to speak of, except on Hawkeye. They were fairly aggressive with snowmaking, which I appreciated. In a year like this, I always head toward the guns.

Friday, they weren’t running the triple, and riding the gondola all day is bit of a hassle on telegear. (want some cheese with that whine?)
