When I posted a history of cross-country skiing at Lake Minnewaska and Mohonk Mountain House a few weeks ago, I was pleased, yet frustrated. Pleased because I felt that it was a good piece, but frustrated because it was a bit one-sided. There was precious little information available about Mohonk.

After several weeks chasing down blind alleys, someone referred me to Mohonk Mountain House’s archivist, Nell Boucher. She kindly shared her knowledge, filling in many gaps about the dawn of time – er, skiing – in Ulster County. Q+A with a Legend Maker: Greg Stump

Greg StumpGreg Stump was an accomplished skier who starred in films by Dick Barrymore and Warren Miller. Inspired by the two legendary filmmakers, he began to make his own films in 1983. His sound tracks featured distinctive music by established artists and his narrative style was compelling.

His most well-known film — The Blizzard of Aahhhs — is credited by many with putting the sport of extreme skiing into the public consciousness. With his new retrospective The Legend of Aahhhs, Stump puts his original game changing ski film — and those of many others — in context. The film is currently screening nationally. Our interview with Greg follows.

Preseason Ski Workout

When I was younger I used to believe that the only workout for skiing was skiing. Preseason Ski Workout.
Front and Side Planks

This basic workout is not “hard core” and will work for average skiers with average fitness levels. It can be done in 15-20 minutes, 3-4 times per week. I try to do it every other day in the preseason and keep it up in the winter on days I don’t ski. The only equipment you need is a core or abs ball, some 10 lb dumb bells, and a resistance band kit. You can buy all it for about $60. You can do most of the workout while watching TV.
