Gore Mountain, NY: 12/22/12

The first full day of winter, was a full day of winter, at Gore Mountain in NY. It was cold, it was windy and it snowed much of the day.  Of the three lifts that ran, two of them are windiest chairs at Gore — the Adirondack Express and the Topridge Triple.  While it probably didn’t get below 20 degrees, many eastern skiers haven’t faced true winter cold yet this season. I know I hadn’t.

I was so excited to experience winter, that I’d a bought a lift ticket just to be out in the weather.  There was excitement about winter all over the hill. Everyone was talking about yesterday’s snow, today’s snow and the potential for snow next week. I ran into a noted local who told me…  “three more inches and it’s all in play.”

Gore Mountain, NY: 11/24/12

It’s only opening day if you’re there right?  We’d missed Gore’s spring skiing bumpfest yesterday. And as I checked the weather last night, a week of warm inversion, followed by rain, and a cold front…well, I wasn’t expecting much.

Zelda, Neve and I all made cautious first turns.  While it seemed kind of crazy to get Neve a lesson when she was only likely to get one run in off the Gondola, I was glad that her first turns were handled by Erin, not me.

Gore Mountain Snow Train: New Schedule

Gore Mountain Snow TrainLast fall the North Creek Snow Train — a tradition originally started in March of 1934 — was reborn when the Saratoga & North Creek Railway announced the rebirth of the service for skiers and riders.

This past week the rail line operator announced that the modern day version of the service — dubbed the Gore Mountain Snow Train — will operate on an expanded schedule during the 2012 – 2013 winter season. The line will provide round-trip transportation from Saratoga Springs to North Creek every Friday, Saturday and Sunday from January 11 until the middle of March.

The Saratoga & North Creek Railway introduced the service last year hoping to attract visitors to North Creek and Gore Mountain. A free shuttle is available in town to transport passengers from the station to the mountain.
