Opening Day Information from Whiteface

You’ve got to give Whiteface credit for understanding exactly what a skier would want to know and pasting it front and center on the homepage:

“Saturday December 5th Snowmakers will be working around the clock all week making snow in anticipation of our new tentative opening date Saturday December 5th. We anticipate opening Excelsior, Summit Express and Upper Valley. These trails will be serviced by the Cloudsplitter Gondola and the Little Whiteface Chair. We will be downloading via the gondola. Lift ticket prices will be $38 for adults, teens and seniors and just $25 for juniors. There will be no beginner terrain available.”

Building a Ski Cabin

It’s no secret that flexibility is an important ingredient in a great ski season. And there are a bunch of impediments to ski flexibility including but not limited to; distance from the mountains, the cost of skiing, job commitments and the availability of last minute lodging.

Our solution to two of these issues was building NYSkiBlog HQ in the Adirondacks. Our little building helps us keep the cost of skiing down and give us the lodging flexibility to get 30+ skidays each year.

Recently another fanatical snow rider asked me if I would share what I learned doing this project. This piece details some of what we learned building the cabin.

Driving to Ski Country

mapI saw an advertisement for a furniture company that appealed to me. The whole commercial was about how they built their own recycling plant and they take back all the packaging for your furniture, promising it will be recycled. (That’s one part of new stuff I always hated — all those boxes and stryofoam peanuts by the curb.)

I went on the web to look them up and send them a note. I got sidetracked and ended up in a “chat” with a customer service rep. She was clearly personally invested in the company and said she had been “chasing a job with them for 2 years.” They are in Syracuse.
