While Killington has come under fire in recent years for a reduced commitment to the eight month season that created “the beast,” the fact remains that the mountain remains incredibly important to New York skiers.  The combination of convenient location, excellent orographics and an aggressive approach to October snowmaking puts Killington top of mind for many of us, especially in the early season. This past season half of all the trip reports posted in the NY Ski Forums in November 2011 were from Killington.

First Turns of the Season at Killington

NY Ski Forum regulars tBatt and Condor, rose before dawn, and headed over to Vermont to capitalize on the first skiable snow of the season. Following is an excerpt and a link to the full trip report.

Killington First Snow: October 28 2011

“Snow in the forecast? Hell yeah! I didn’t know who was getting what, and toyed with the idea of going to Whiteface for Toll Road v2.0. With reports of 12” new at Kmart, we decided to go for the blue light special.

There was about 8 inches of snow with more in drifts and less where the wind was blowing. Having a base would have been nice as there were patches of overgrown grass that grabbed your tips. But it was a bluebird day with temps just above 30. It was a hell of a day.”

Gore Mountain Passholder Decisions

With ORDA budget issues looming and the early pass deadlines near, Gore passholders are weighing their options. For some Gore skiers, central Vermont is an enticing option that isn’t that much further than the southern Adirondacks.

Gore vs Killington

I thought it would be interesting to look at the numbers for Gore and Killington. I’m using Killington because it’s relatively close. And Kmart is loaded with some of the specific things that Gore skiers crave … operating budget, snowfall, and snowmaking.

This is not to imply that the mountains are comparable. They aren’t. Comparing Gore to Killington is like comparing Hickory to Gore. This is about looking at the pros and cons of spending more and driving farther to ski in Vermont.
