Split Rock Quarry Explosion: 100 Years Later

In July 2010, I posted a piece about offroad biking at the former Split Rock Quarry in the western suburbs of Syracuse.

Over the next eight years, the piece ended up getting a surprising amount of pageviews from non-skiers in Central New York.

Apparently, they’d stumbled upon it through searches and then posted or e-mailed me several dozen comments about the massive munitions explosion in 1918, mountain biking through the abandoned area, and especially the eerie atmosphere that has reigned there since its abandonment decades ago, even on a beautiful sunny day.

Woodstream Ski Area Fall 2015 Update

Editor’s Note: Woodstream Ski Area is a private ski area that is the creation of an enterprising young man that we know as Ethan Snow.  He’s acted as designer, builder and manager for the facility with the help of a few volunteers.

What follows is his offseason infrastructure update for the 170 vert area in Oneonta NY.

It’s been a busy off-season for me and Woodstream Ski Area. Between a full time summer job, and recently starting college as a commuting student, it has not been easy creating time for new, and much needed improvements. Still, a lot has happened this past summer and I’m excited. Last season was a major turning point for Woodstream.

Greek Peak Buys Toggenburg

Greek Peak ToggenburgVirgil NY: In a press conference at the mountain today it was announced that the partners of Greek Peak Mountain Resort are acquiring Toggenburg Mountain Winter Sports Center. The price is currently undisclosed. The transaction was executed as an asset purchase agreement to acquire Toggenburg on August 26, 2015.

The announcement was foreshadowed on Tuesday when a press release from longtime Toggenburg owner Jim Hickey and Greek Peak co-owners Marc Stemerman and John Meier referenced “an attractive offer provided to season pass holders through [a] business combination.”
