First Week at Mount van Hoevenberg

Finally, I found a downhill turn that I can take flat out. It’s the sweeping right hander that takes you into Mount van Hoevenberg’s biathlon range. Look around the corner, where you want to go. In the name of all that’s holy, don’t look down at your ski tips. Step lively in the apex. The transition back to diagonal stride is a challenge.

A few months ago, I moved to Saranac Lake. I’m getting used to the rhythm of life in the north country. I should have known better, but I dilly-dallied with pre-season ski prep. So as Mount van Ho and other northeast ski centers open, I’m still organizing my quiver.

Gore Mountain: Early Season Workout

The last few years, Gore has become my early season goto mountain. On occasion we’ll get some crazy lake effect that opens up resorts in CNY, but we know we can rely on Gore to be open, by the end of November. A little elevation and a few degrees of latitude have a big impact on snowmaking and snow retention.

While the rain washed us out last week, Gore held on. Midweek skiing is great work if you can get it; Cam and I decided to drive up together early Friday morning.

It was 6am when I pulled into Stewart’s to meet Cam. The sign was like a lighthouse guiding me through the fog to a hot cup of coffee.

Indy Pass adds Hickory Ski Center

GRANBY, COLORADO – Today Indy Pass announced they are working with Unofficial Networks to provide financial assistance to Hickory Ski Center in Warrensburg NY. The goal is to help Hickory secure the insurance needed to run lifts for the first time in eight years.

Hickory Hill was founded by veterans of the 10th Mountain Division in 1946 and has been part of the community since that time. Faced with rising costs for lift inspection and insurance, the ski area faces an uncertain future. Recently Hickory laid out the numbers and the challenge inspired Tim Konrad, publisher of Unofficial Networks.
