Gore Mountain, NY: 2/20/09

It was 10 degrees this morning. The Gondi started at 8:05. I got two runs on the front, surface was very hard but not ice. It was windy, and on Foxlair, Fairview and Pine Knot there was some sweet stuff on the side.

Straightbrook

An impetuous jump into Otter Slide proved unwise and quite challenging. Light frozen mank. Is untracked frozen mank actually crud? Or does crud have to be cutup? My first run in the trees in six weeks — conditions were smooth, I was not.

Double Barrel

I saw Zach coming on to Hawkeye from DoubleBarrel. He highly recommended it. I actually went over to the steeper side of Double Barrel next to Rumor. It’s the old gondi line. That headwall really cuts down on traffic, but led to some softer snow below:

Gore Mountain, NY: 1/3/09

What a difference a day makes. And 5″ of snow.

Gore called it 3, measured at the base. I find my measurements at 1900 feet are usually higher than Gore measurements, but I’d expect the difference to be less than 2 inches on five. Garnet Hill reported 6 inches.

Regardless, it made a big difference. Winds were high (still are at 6pm) but with temps in the 20s, wind chills were manageable, for me.

Gore Mountain, NY: 1/2/09

Another tough day at the office. Temps were warmer and wind speeds were almost nil. So comfort was most improved. And considering the bulletproof conditions from yesterday, Gore did a reasonable job with what they had.

Gore's Echo Trail

Common areas (Base, Saddle, Summit of Bear) were covered. But Gore will never be Okemo or Killington. There just isn’t the horsepower to recover from major NCP events the way the Vermont titans can.

For some reason snowmaking continued on Twister…which was pick of the day. They were blowing on Pine Knot, which I do understand. Blowing on Uncas? It’s not open and probably won’t be until after the holiday is over. How about Showcase, or something on the Dark Side?
