Run Wild and Verkeerderkill Falls

Ten years ago I started photographing trail running events, almost by accident.

My respect for these athletes has grown over the years, and it still amazes me to witness the grit and strength of these runners as they traverse trails through the mountains on courses of ranging from 10 to 70 miles in length.

Over the years, I’ve come to know many of the runners with appreciation for their perseverance, but also for their warm sense of community. Trail runners are an incredibly friendly group of athletes.

Ski Season Calendar

When does ski season start?

The summer solstice is, by our thinking, the farthest point from the ski season in New York.  After the solstice, the days get shorter and forward we move closer to winter. We smile a little bit wider as it happens.

Fifteen years ago, we first published our Ski Season Calendar, a list of milestones for skiers on the longest day of the year. It’s become a tradition to feature it on the home page and update it as necessary.  It’s fair to say that ski life has returned to a new, more expensive, normal.  One immutable truth: we had some excellent ski days this season.

June Turns on Mount Marcy

For many skiers, the season in New York ends sometime in March. For those a bit more passionate about the sport, some may make the pilgrimage to the more elevated resorts such as Whiteface or Gore, which usually spin their lifts until around the second half of April. And, for those who just can’t let the amazing NY season end, we find a way to continue making turns through May and even into June (if you’re crazy enough).

Whiteface’s Skyward, which sits at over 4,300’ in elevation at its top, usually holds a decent snow patch that is hiked and skied for a good couple weeks into May, eventually becoming too sparse and rocky by the time the Veteran’s Memorial Highway opens in the middle of the month.
