The Fifth Season

Some label bug season the Fifth Season. In my mind, the Fifth Season comes after fall and before winter. Maybe hunters think this way too.

Days like today defy categorization. It’s November. As a skier, you want it to be cold. You can’t call it Indian Summer — while it’s way above the average temps for this time of year, it’s still cool. If it has to be 55 degrees, in November, in the mountains — I’ll just have to enjoy it. Today challenged my ideas about this time of year.

Upper Hudson Railroad

With a rainy day on tap (and more in the forecast to follow), we decided to get tickets and ride the Upper Hudson Railway from North Creek to Riparius.

We started our day at the North Creek Farmers Market Brunch with a stellar meal accompanied by the music of Tony Jenkins Jazz Trip.

Then we headed over to the depot to buy our tickets and climb aboard. The grand old lady sounds like a bit of a grinder and she sits idling at the station. And with more than two hours allotted for the 16 mile trip to Riverside station and back, don’t expect modern efficient transport.

Zermatt, CH: July 2010

For the last couple of years, we’ve wanted to take the kids to Europe. The stars and our schedules finally aligned this summer.

After a week in Paris and a visit to the Normandy beaches, we headed to Zermatt, home of the Matterhorn and the largest summer ski area in the Alps.

Zermatt is a no-car town — all the vehicles are electric. After a short ($30!) taxi ride, we arrived at our apartment. I’ve been to some ski resorts, but haven’t had a view like this from my room.
