Oswego River Kayak from Three Rivers Point

200 years ago Three Rivers Point was one of the most happening spots in Central NY. Here the Oneida and Seneca Rivers form the Oswego river and flow north to Lake Ontario.

It was a prominent meeting spot for Native Americans and when the colonists arrived they made camp at the same location. An inn was soon erected and trade on the rivers expanded with salt mining operations on Cayuga and Seneca. The peak of Three Rivers Point rose and fell with the Erie Canal, and these days it’s a quaint park in the town of Clay.

The shores of Three River Point Park were lined with fisherman on a warm summer Saturday in mid-August.

Woods Valley SFM Skatepark Rail Jam

Over the last few years I have been lucky to cover some amazing events and tap into the culture, the community and the park vibe in upstate NY. A few stand out as true zeitgeists like the first Berms, Bruises and Beers at Hunt Hollow. In Rome NY one movement is traveling with such velocity that it cannot be ignored.

The SFM Skatepark Project was born from the tragic passing of Stone Mercurio last April and since then has grown into one of the “most prolific grassroots movements in Rome.” Family and friends quickly organized to honor Stone, a native Roman who loved to shred and loved his city.

Greek Peak: Monday Morning Zig

In case you didn’t notice, it snowed last weekend. Across the East snow starved skiers and riders flocked to mountains, especially on Sunday. Disheartening lift line photos were shared on social media, some hundreds of people deep.

To maximize stoke it was important to strategize. For me the decision was easy: take Monday off and get the leftovers. After riding in the NYSB gang at Plattekill on Sunday, I shifted gears to Greek Peak for Monday morning.

Like the weather this winter, Farah and I got a late start getting to Greek. We rolled in at 11 and the parking lot was busier than we expected. Don’t these people have jobs?
