Road Riding in the Flatlands

Hopewell roadNorthwestern NJ is a great place to live if you like bike riding. There is easy access to great untrafficked roads, both paved and unpaved. The area to the north of town is almost rural. And there’s a surprisingly wide variety of mountain biking, both recreational and technical.

The area is prized by riders of all types. On weekends from April until November, if you are riding in the Sourlands, you’ll see packs of cycling clubs both official and informal, accessing the variety of routes in this part of the state. There are a ton of maps and resources for choosing routes. If you’re from the area, and know it like I do…you just head out and put something together.

Gpetrics on Dodge’s Drop

Gpetrics is an accomplished above treeline skier from Hanover, NH. He’s addicted to high adventure and he’s an excellent photographer. When I saw the picture below, it captured my imagination. Following are excerpts from the TR he posted on Time for Tuckerman, after a trip to the rockpile, in early April 2008.

When I raced in the Toni Matt downhill at Big Mountain a good 6 or 7 years ago, I finally opened my eyes and learned about all the history people like Mr. Matt and Brooks Dodge put into my backyard. I’ve had a hankering to do some of the big lines that these guys pioneered. Tuesday April 8th was the day.

Gore Mountain, NY: 4/10/08

Gore Mountain SummitUp this morning and off to Gore, after skiing Whiteface yesterday. I was curious about the condition of Gore, and the coverage. I knew it would be interesting to compare the two mountains side by side under basically the same conditions.

Actually it was bad couple of days for electronics as my iPod died on the drive home too. Man I hate listening to the radio driving through the Catskills. Despite yesterdays really warm temps, it did go below freezing last night. At the cabin, all the puddles had a thin layer of ice.
