Ski Days 11, 12, 13 and 14

Gore Mountain was great this weekend.

When I got to the cabin Thursday night, the moon was full and it was really warm so I went out for an nordic ski. I was on the first Gondola Friday morning. From the top of Bear I cruised down Uncas to head up the Straightbrook Chair and over to the Darkside.

It’s great having it open. On Friday they opened Lower Steilhang and Lower Darby. I hope they never widen any of the trails over there.

Gore Mountain, NY: 1/19 – 1/21/07

Ski Days 8, 9 and 10

I’m new at the trip reporter game, and not the greatest with details. As Leo Kottke once said “I’ll give ya what I got.”

All three days, coverage on any thing that was open was good — no rocks and a nice surface. Hard but no ice to speak of, except on Hawkeye. They were fairly aggressive with snowmaking, which I appreciated. In a year like this, I always head toward the guns.

Friday, they weren’t running the triple, and riding the gondola all day is bit of a hassle on telegear. (want some cheese with that whine?)

Gore Mountain: Christmas Week 2006

Gore Mountain snowmakingI skied Gore all week. In the past I haven’t always understood how Gore chooses to allocate snowmaking resources. But I have to say that this past week, Gore went all out. They blew on everything that was open, every night. They blew all day long on the days when it was cold enough. And while Hawkeye’s opening was a bit of a frustration, they opened up something new everyday.

On the 28th it went down to 10 degrees at our cabin and the mountain made huge progress overnight. If you got there for first tracks — especially on the 29th — the skiing was excellent. It was cloudy, but up top you were actually above the clouds.
