Action Park NJ Reopens

Most people in New Jersey are familiar with the legend of Action Park. Even those too young to remember have heard the stories.

The drownings, the broken bones, and in one case electrocutions that marred the park’s reputation and left it buried in litigation until it was forced to close down in 1996. This summer the park found a way to reopen.

We drove to Vernon early last Saturday with a plan to arrive as soon as they opened and cover as much as the park as possible. We reached the compound just after ten to find the parking lot empty save for two teenage attendants and the old familiar rainbow banner from the 90s. Parking is six dollars.

The Garden State: Wild Roses

Over the past few days, my favorite wildflower, the Wild Rose — the Multiflora Rose — has exploded across the New Jersey landscape.

According to American Meadows: “The botanical term for wild rose is ‘species rose’, which means just what it says — a species that occurs naturally, with no help from man — a true wildflower. There are over 100 of these worldwide, some native to North America, many from the Orient and Europe.”

With their trademark five white petals, Wild Roses are virtually everywhere: in the middle of forests, along the sides of highways and roads, next to ponds and streams. Even if you have a blindfold on, they’re tough to miss.
