Whiteface Opens T2B in 2022

The first day of a new season is always special. While the quantity and quality of skiing usually isn’t the best, it’s a chance to get back on snow, to reconnect with familiar faces and scenery, and to get back in shape for better days to come.

The first day of the season is even better when it’s before Thanksgiving with really good conditions on 3000 vertical feet of top-to-bottom skiing.

For me, opening day of the 2022-2023 season at Whiteface came after a hiatus. Still, the tallest ski area in the Northeast remains one of my favorites.

Mud Pond and Round Pond Paddling

The Adirondacks are filled with hidden gems, this is clearly one of the things that makes them such a special place. Expansive grandeur and intimacy can be found everywhere and a few years ago we discovered one of these special places in our own backyard, in Thurman.

Mud Pond and Round Pond are the headwaters of Mill Creek, located upstream from Garnet Lake.

They can be accessed via Mud Pond Road, about halfway to Little Pond when traveling from Johnsburg to the Crane Mountain trail head off Garnet Lake Road.

McCauley Mountain Hike

During the winter months, McCauley is the center of the Old Forge community. The mountain is always busy with after school programs, live music and a variety of food specials in the lodge. It was a much different case a few weekends ago when Farah and I decided to hike the mountain.

Overgrown grass and a lack of cars in the parking lot may convince the unknowing that the resort is abandoned. Upon closer inspection though you’ll see the well-maintained and used mountain bike trails. The light construction at the base area is also a tip off that the biggest little mountain isn’t dead, just hibernating until winter.
