Gore Mountain Snow Train: New Schedule

Gore Mountain Snow TrainLast fall the North Creek Snow Train — a tradition originally started in March of 1934 — was reborn when the Saratoga & North Creek Railway announced the rebirth of the service for skiers and riders.

This past week the rail line operator announced that the modern day version of the service — dubbed the Gore Mountain Snow Train — will operate on an expanded schedule during the 2012 – 2013 winter season. The line will provide round-trip transportation from Saratoga Springs to North Creek every Friday, Saturday and Sunday from January 11 until the middle of March.

The Saratoga & North Creek Railway introduced the service last year hoping to attract visitors to North Creek and Gore Mountain. A free shuttle is available in town to transport passengers from the station to the mountain.

NYSkiBlog Ski Resort Survey

Each fall when SKI Magazine publishes their annual reader survey of eastern ski resorts, we hear a lot of griping about the results. This year one of our contributors, Coach Z, decided to set up a similar poll and put it out for NY Ski Blog readers.

Coach used the same mountains as the SKI survey, except that he added, admittedly arbitrarily, Gore Mountain to the mix. The survey was posted in our Forums and ran from Oct 20 to Oct 31, 2012.

A note on methodology: we don’t claim that our survey was scientific or all-inclusive. It was done somewhat “on a lark” and the volume of response surprised us.  It is now our intent to do this survey annually. We’ll work to make it our own and improve its value next year.

Respondents were primarily from New York and New Jersey:

• 25% live North of Glens Falls or in the North Country
• 33% live Upstate from Glens falls down through the Hudson Valley
• The remainder, over 40%, are flatlanders

They ski in New York:

• 40% called Gore Mountain their home mountain
• 20% are Whiteface passholders
• 15% are Catskill regulars (Plattekill, Belleyare, Hunter)
• 15% were free agents, not tied to a ski area

More Gore: Guns on Sunway

As reported at the beginning of the off season, Gore Mountain continues their incremental infrastructure upgrades.  One important improvement that will help get the East Side going in the early season is the extension of the Foxlair snowmaking line down skier’s right on Sunway.

Gore Mountain News: Snowguns
New Guns on Sunway

Last season, short, marginal snowmaking temperatures hindered the process of opening early season terrain. The addition of this additional pipeline and five new hydrants with tower guns will allow Gore to blow snow from both sides of the trail and reduce the time needed to cover the crucial intersection of Sunway and Wildair.
