Gore Mountain, NY: New Years Day 2009

Today was a beautiful day. If you don’t care about surface conditions. The National Weather Service was calling for early morning wind chills of 30 below zero. From experience those numbers don’t account for the windiest spots on chairlifts.

We slept in. I skied solo. Surfaces were boilerplate. Lifts were closed. Parking lot, Lodges and Gondola were crowded and trails were deserted.

Still, I really wanted to try out my new fatter skis; not the best day for fatter skis for sure. When first trying out new gear, I’m always convinced it will never be as good as my old gear. I hit the firm bumps on Lies on my first run. It wasn’t easy.

Gore Mountain, NY: New Years Eve 2008

Ski Day 12: Today was a tale of technical difficulty, and intense battle with the elements. I know I’ve been accused of being an incurable optimist but… great skiing. It didn’t look good for the Gondi. It wasn’t moving at all at 8:15. One piece of true comedy, Gore announced that the only lift cleared for operation was Lift 3, the Sunway Chair. Everyone from the Gondi line zooped over to the Sunway Chair. The lifty over there got kinda nervous I think. He can usually sleep over there, and he was really anxious for the ok to start loading. For some reason everyone went up, one skier per chair, it was like a scene from Mad River Glen.
