Chimney Mountain, NY

Kings Flow is a large manmade lake at the end of Big Brook Road near Indian Lake. The body of water is named for the King family, who logged and farmed the area in the late 1800s.

The Kings Flow trailhead is a primary access point for the northwestern Siamese Ponds Wilderness. The Flow is primarily on private land, but the current owners allow access to Puffer Pond and Chimney Mountain.

Chimney is a well-known, traditional destination. The 900-foot climb is steep, but short, and leads to expansive views, caves, and the Chimney itself: an interesting geologic formation.

Sawyer Mountain, NY: 9/17/10

For our last full day of vacation, we were looking for another kid-friendly hike that we could pull off in half a day. A short drive, to a short walk, with 800 feet of vertical and a nice view — Sawyer Mountain fit the bill.

The DEC trailhead is on the west side of Route 28/30 about 4.5 miles north of Indian Lake. The hiking starts out with a gradual pitch and never really gets steep over the mile or so to the top.

Watch Hill in Indian Lake, NY

With a week of vacation in the Adirondacks and a four-year old who’s ready to start hiking, we’ve been keeping our eye out for kid friendly destinations. We took a tip from an experienced goreskimom and decided to check out Watch Hill on the western shore of Indian Lake.

The “trailhead” is completely unmarked but we were lucky enough to find it. I snapped this photo to make it easier for others to find. From Indian Lake head south on Route 30. This spot is 1.2 miles south of the Snowy Mountain Trailhead on Route 30.
