Snow Ridge Opens North Slope

I spend a lot of time at work setting expectations. It’s important stakeholders know what they are getting to avoid disappointment. Skiing and riding in New York can be the same. Set your expectations modestly and winter will never let you down. It can magnify the fun you are having on the slopes. It does for me.

Last Saturday I geared up late in the morning and headed to Snow Ridge without expectations. On the way up Route 26, the resort comes into sight. From there you can see the face of the mountain. This view always gives me an clue about what to expect.

From a mile away I could see the deep carves in the snow surrounding the single ribbon of groomer down the middle. It was going to be a good day.

On my way to the lift, a snowboarder ribbed me saying “what are you riding a kids board?” I was on my rock board and it is starting to get a little short for me. As we struck up a conversation and got in line, I heard my name. Steve and his friend Pat apparently already knew Zack, who I just met.

I got another ribbing for showing up 30 minutes after opening. Rightfully so. The first run down the left side on the North slope was glorious. We ripped through the open field of fresh snow. Blower face shots in December. So good.

We rode the wide open terrain until it was tracked out. More of Steve’s friends showed up and we decided to mob the woods. We went as far skiers left as we could while still making the hard cut to the right to get back to the cat track.

You had to be cautious and pick your line. The snow was so light, you could bottom out, and I clipped a few stumps or rocks. No guts no glory. The reward was plenty of deep stuff to make some beautiful turns.

The next lap up the chairlift we ran into Nick coming out of the lift house. He was all smiles as we shook hands and said hello. I floated the idea of him running the snow pocket t-bar. He said “The Snow Pocket’s open. You gotta earn your turns.” I’ll wait ’til she spins.

After a few more laps in the trees and one last rip through the open fields I called it a day. My legs were feeling it and so was my board. There were a few gnarly gashes in the nose from stumps I clipped. Tools not jewels.

It’s a fine line between thin and in.

I came to Snow Ridge not expecting anything in particular, and it paid off, with some early season powder. Even better, I ran into some friends to share the day. Thanks to the Ridge for spinning.
