Goon Jam 2 kicked off it’s tour right here in NY at Snow Ridge. Tour stops are at independent resorts across the country, and the focus is on supporting family-owned businesses while spreading the love of snowboarding.
Despite the truly $hitty weather over the previous few weeks the Ridge was ready. GM Nick told me the snow we were riding on was made over a month ago. As expected the park setup was on point, after the park crew and Flower Skate Shops boys worked through Friday night getting it ready. The layout was sweet, up top a few corrugated tubes and rails were buried for jibbing and stalling.
Below there was a choice of three lines. On the right a small line, with a flat rail and round tube rail. To the left features got a little bigger with the side kink and flat-down rail. In the middle, the money line featured the infamous creeper and down-flat-down rails back to back. To finish it all off the wall ride was set up at the end.
By 10am riders were showing up and the magic carpet started spinning. I took laps with Matty B and dapped up the Flower Skate Shop boys putting the final touches on the park. Things were heating up, and I saw a lot of familiar faces and new ones. Last year a bunch of the Goon Crew was out riding and representing.
This year had even more east coast pros. The Spotheads crew with the likes of Jake Fournier and Joey Leon were tearing it up. VermontLocs was throwing down and stacking up clips. Even TikTok star Cuttheactivist came out to enjoy the show.
The jam kicked off at 12pm with Lucas on the bullhorn. The stoke was high, as riders with little regard to their health went big. All the crews were throwing down, even the Woods Valley homies. Matty B is always on his game, and he was soon joined by Sal and Bobby. I don’t see Sal riding a lot of rails, but the old mountain biker still has it and Bobby still throws down despite being a sasquatch of man.
Later in the jam session a few riders switched over to snowskates to see who could land the biggest trick and snag a Hovland skate. Matty B was putting on a clinic but Ben Schirner laid down a hammer with Boardslide on the down-flat-down. Those still on snowboards started sesh-ing the wall ride.
It was a race to the top with more than a few going big and getting some help from the crowd to stay on the right side. One of the Flower Shop riders, Sinceyer was the first to land a backflip on the wall and then tried dropping in on the skate. The Spotheads guys were going for one footed stalls and huge wall rides. The jam was officially on fire.
While everyone was throwing down, I took a break to take these shots. I talked to Lucas who said a few vendors had backed out but Nick and SR were never in doubt, they were going to make it happen. Family owned businesses supporting each other is not a new theme at the Ridge. I had to make moves before the jam was over, I was hyped. On the ride home, all I was thinking about was sliding rails.
Sounds like a lot of fun to participate and watch
Goon Jam was at Magic today, drew a good crowd.
I am not a park guy at all but this event looks like a lot of fun. It’s good to see Snow Ridge bouncing back too.
