“This preliminary estimate of “Primitive Areas” — according to the Forest Service’s Recreational Opportunity Spectrum methodology — indicates the truly remote areas of the Adirondack Park are relatively small and precious resource. The map illustrates the key remote areas that are greater than 3 miles from most motorized uses (roads and snowmobile trails) or 2 miles from waters where motorboats are permitted. Primitive areas measured this way are estimated to be less than 3% of the Park’s total of 6 million acres. This preliminary estimate does not take into account military training flights over the park.”
