Royal Mountain

Royal Mountain logoRoyal Mountain opened in 1956 in Caroga Lake New York. By 1970, the hill had fallen on hard times and was up for sale in a foreclosure auction. Jim Blaise, with help from local investors, bid $30,000 and acquired the property.

Blaise has increased the terrain at Royal by 40 percent and installed a double chair to supplement the existing T-bar. The mountain’s vertical drop and the length of the trails are modest, but good pitch and an intelligent layout combine to provide both legitimate challenge and variety. The area operates only on weekends and holidays.

The key to financial success at Royal has been motocross racing. Royal is one of the top 100 race courses in the country. During the winter, the number of skiers rarely exceeds 600, but for a day of motocross racing in a the summer, the mountain routinely draws as many as 2,500. This innovation has been the key to Royal’s survival.
