New York and Ohio skiers have another area to hit this winter with the reopening of Cockaigne Ski Resort in western New York.
The Cockaigne ski resort trail map features 15 trails, three lifts, and a new snowmobile adventure park.
Cockaigne close after the base lodge was destroyed in a fire in 2001. In 2017, new owners purchased Cockaigne updating the lifts, lighting and snowmaking. The resort reopened again in the 2020/21 season.
Cockaigne’s biggest claim to fame may be its location in eastern Chautauqua County, 20 miles south of Lake Erie, along the Chautauqua Ridge that gets pounded with lake effect snow off Lake Erie. The resort averages 175 inches of snow each winter, the highest total in western New York.
Abundant snowfall and improved snowmaking help ensure the resort is well-covered all season. Though the vertical is modest at 430 feet, but the natural snowfall is a big draw.
Cracker Jack, the longest slope, is part of the new snowmobile adventure park, which includes banked turns, berms and other features. Snowmobilers can also connect with Chautauqua County’s 400-mile network of trails at nearby Boutwell Hill State Forest.
In 2022, Cockaigne was put back on the market for six million dollars. In the 22/23 season the resort had an extremely difficult year, recording only 35 inches of snow. The resort had its shortest season in recent memory, closing on February 22 2023. In the summer of 2023, the price of the resort was slashed to $3.5 million. Cockaigne will not operate in ’23/24.
