Stratton Conditions

Conditions are scratchy with lots of ice and pebbles mixed in. Not too windy. I feel like I am skiing in Pennsylvania with little or no snow in the woods.

Stratton had about 6" when we got to base at 715. The parking was overrun by ikon pass holders as this was an early access for ikon today. The trails were chopped up by 8am. There are massive lines at all lifts and the gondola is on a wind hold. Hopefully the crowd will thin after lunch. It is still snowing and the fill ins are really helping.

Glad I could only ski Saturday. Today sounds like an S-show.

Conditions were definitely scratchy as you describe. But the greens were perfect for us to warm up our legs for our trip west, especially my wife after having had knee surgery in March.

We really liked Mike's way from the top but it was insanely crowded. Within a 5 minute span two A-Hole snowboarders were within inches, not feet, of taking out my wife and then daughter. They were ripping down without regard to others, which seemed uncomfortably common.

Special thanks to x10003q for the behind the scenes assistance. The details that you provided were extremely helpful.

What is early access for IKON?

What is early access for IKON?
Once per month Ikon pass holders will have early access before the official opening if the area offers early access. Stratton opens at 830, early access is 745. It is an addition charge on your pass and I think it is weekends and maybe some holidays. I do not have it.

Anyone ski Stratton since last week? Website says machine groomed variable conditions.

Stratton started with a delayed 9am open in order to reload all the chairs/gondolas they pulled off the high speed lifts. It was right around freezing and there was off and on freezing drizzle during the day. We got to experience true variable conditions at Stratton all day, including golf balls for entire runs, frozen icy surface, heavy corn snow, and a few spots of actual nice soft surfaces. The top 1/4 of the mountain was in the sun while the rest of the mountain was in a dense cloud.

Top, gondola did not open until lunch
There was a good crowd that slimmed down quite a bit after lunch as the heavy corn snow wore people out.

After the gondola opened all the lines on the other lifts disappeared.
The Sun Bowl is open including Lower Down Easter and half of the Supertrail

The Supertrail

I went to Stratton today to meet up with my dad, and because they had some of my favorite trails open that I hadn't skied in a while.

A bluebird day in the morning, that gradually got cloudy, and ended with my first time skiing in a thunderstorm on my last few runs.

Normally you can see Bromley from the top of the Sunrise Express. At this point it was just storm clouds. I kept thinking they were going to close early, but the lifts stayed open all the way to 4.

A couple minutes after I took this picture during my last run on Upper Kidderbrook, I saw a huge flash of lightning followed by a loud clap of thunder.
