Skiing's Future

A hit opinion piece on skiing from Bloooomberg. Meanwhile out west is having mega feet of snow.
Skiing is fun.
I’ve been bouncing back and forth between the different stages of grieving too. I haven’t thought of it that way until reading that but that hit home.

For a little while though, if you can afford to chase the big events they are really big. I think we’ll see huge winters with more stability in say the San Juan’s for instance which opens up new possibilities.

Another point made in that article that seems to be missed by most folks that say “well there will still be skiing somewhere” is what the costs to go skiing are going to become.

That's 100% true. I feel the same way about it here in Western NY Finger Lakes region. Don't really like big city people moving here, driving driving up real estate etc.
In the Eastern Finger lakes region of The UpState ya can buy this beauty for less than 80 grand, has lake rights to Tully Lake & ya can be on a lift in minutes at Song mountain. I don’t know if the little boat is included though.

Besides a full reno - cash only and a golf shot from I-81. :)

It’s a feature, not a bug. There’s even a Burger King just off 81, within walking distance.
Changed a tire in their lot when it was below zero one night coming home from Lab years ago.

Sad read...but unfortunately there's probably alot of truth to it, particularly stands out in a season like we've had so far. This particular story was really interesting to me, as I drew alot of similarities to my skiing life (my dad 1st Gen skier in our family, me 2nd, now getting my 3 y/o on skis....), and it's something I think about alot (again, particularly this season when pretty much every time I brought my kid skiing I was sweating my ass off pulling him around 'cause it was 30+ degrees every time). Not that I'm giving up on skiing by any means, but it's scary and sad to know that it's probably only going to become more challenging. I wonder if I'll be able to have similar experiences with my kid as I did with my dad growing up...and it's not just weather that's the issue...the costs of deviating from your home mountain seem so challenging these days. I remember the good old days of gas station coupons, warren miller movie coupons for out west, and scoring stuff on craigslist days before a trip or even while on a trip somewhere last minute....

I'm hopeful everything that exists today will exist 30 years from now, just 500 miles north.

The climate refugees from Florida, The South West and Cali can buy my house in Jersey and hopefully by then my wife will let us move north too.

I guess that's a potential option...however I currently like my setup/routine. Being based out of the adirondacks instead of the jersey shore would be alot better than many other options...so what's that mean then, ADK becomes summer only spot and driving to far northern Quebec to go skiing lol...
