Poma Lifts

Some tows rip. Sketchy fun when you mix in the Bousquet grip

For posterity: following are reports for areas I’ve skied over the past 20 years that are either 100% or predominantly surface lifts (in the Alps, a high-speed chair, gondola, tram, cog railway, or funicular will often take you from the low-elevation base village up to the actual ski terrain, after which you’ll be on t-bars or platters the rest of the day). The hills with asterisks indicate that they’re closed, likely for good.

Has anyone skied other ones? For example, I’ve yet to visit Cazenovia Ski Club east of Syracuse, NY and it still appears to be in operation.

Ski Venture is still running in Scotia. They have 2 rope tows. Alpine Meadows in Saratoga Springs had 2 T bars, but it closed in the late 80s.Towasentha Park in Guilderland had a handle tow that was free for town residents, but it's been gone for at least 25 years.

Whaleback (N.H.) has a handle tow and t-bar. There's a t-bar at the top of Blackcomb.

Mount Whitney in L.P. had two t-bars. Closed ~'92. Louise removed their platter this past summer.

Re. Blackcomb....I've always wondered how they anchor lift towers in a glacier.

Portillo has the best surface lift ever:

Roca Jack!

Best lift ever!! Get on, they hit the switch and you go up, then you have to get off facing uphill on a 30 degree pitch while avoiding the other 3 people on the lift with you.

The short hike up to the traverse that accesses the chutes on that side made riding it often totally worth it!

Campgaw always had 2 double chairs. At some point it also had a rope tow and a t-bar. The t-bar was replaced with a magic carpet and the rope tow area is now a drag lift for tubing.
