Poma Lifts

Alpine Meadows in Saratoga Springs had 2 T bars, but it closed in the late 80s.Towasentha Park in Guilderland had a handle tow that was free for town residents, but it's been gone for at least 25 years.

Rode Tbar at Lab before Covid when it was busy and they ran it. Ya can get off at the top of Jacopie and not do the last little bit of uphill, runs quicker than the triple too.

Poma lifts I've been on in the last decade were "transportation" or "commuter" lifts. They were at Big Sky (makes some main base condos ski in/out), Snowmass (at the summit), and Powder Mountain.

Midweek, using the poma lift is the only option at Howelsen Hill. It's a little old school ski area run by the town of Steamboat Springs. There was a beginner having a very hard time staying on. There are optional exits but only one was open. She got off, but that put her at the top of a difficult trail. Her friend had to come the the rescue and they walked up to the start of the green off the top.

Big Sky had one for patrol before the tram that went up along side First Gully and stopped just shy of the summit. They used it for avy control. They would send bombs up before getting on it. I don’t think it was ever open to the public. It must have been some ride.

Louise removed their platter this past summer.
Gah, I just noticed this ^^. Understandable given the mechanical issues described in this obit, but still sad to hear.

I'm glad that Ski Cooper in Colorado bucked this trend by installing a brand new t-bar on its expert terrain expansion last year at a surprisingly high price point to a non-lift geek: reportedly $800K.

Awesome that they allow skiing right on the liftline.

Waterville Valley installed a T-bar on the summit to replace a double chair. A lot easier to keep a surface lift going when it's windy or snowing than a chair. What's unusual is that the terrain is all blues up there. Quite fun in the sun.

TBars are not as cold a ride as chairs are as helped by being out of the wind more and yer moving to boot.

Chairlifts = break time. Skiing those tows gets you fatigued quick. I like them more but you gotta catch a break more often. Super hard to charge all day, I don’t care who you talk to.

Hickory comes to mind.
