Magic Conditions

January 5 12Noon: We re-open this weekend on Saturday at 8:30 as we expand to the Green mid-mtn chairlift with Wand down to Show Off open. These will be intermediate-level trails. Beginners/novices can use the beginner area or terrain park slope. Snowmaking is ongoing today on Wand and Show Off. Saturday we will be making snow up top on Upper Magic Carpet and Medium for opening next week. Also on Saturday, GoonJam festival is in the terrain park with fun, competitions and prizes from 12-3, and the terrain park will be open for Night Park action from 4-7p (separate tickets for the Night Park. Registration info for Goon Jam is on our events calendar page. Late Saturday Night into Sunday we expect 4-10″ of snow to start adding base across the mountain! As there is zero base on the mountain, this will not open any terrain at the top, but possibly something lower angle on Sunday afternoon from Green Chair if snow comes in at double digits and somewhat heavy consistency (given no base)–all depending on what Ski Patrol finds. Do not ski under ropes as there are many hidden dangers after this summer’s flooding!

Think cold and snow!

UPHILL TRAVEL: Closed until further notice depending on terrain expansion

Dutch Hill and Hogback are on my hit list. I actually made it to Hogback a few years ago but tweaked something in my back loading the car that morning and was limited to sampling the bourbon in the distillery that used to be the lodge...

Had planned on getting to Magic on our annual Gore/Pico/Magic skifari in a few weeks but with the Mrs out for the season may not make it unless I do a pit stop on the way back from Jay. Hopefully they get a little help from mother nature over the next few weeks
Looks like southern VT will get hammered by this storm. I might need to make a pilgrimage to Prospect.

Magic won't open red today, which makes sense. There's simply no base and as anyone who knows Magic, there's nothing but crud on that mountain. They're going to preserve as much snow as possible to get through this weeks wetness and open more trails late in the week. I don't think the snow totals are high enough, nor is the consistency firm enough, to let skiers shred the top.

Jan 9 8:00am: Snowmaking continued through the night and will go through today on Upper Carpet, Medium, Learning Area and base area before the storm arrives to open summit Red Chair for MLK Weekend with more terrain! There will be lots of precipitation with this storm, some of it will fall as snow early and some will fall as r**n late. If we get as much as 4-8″ then that will hopefully mitigate the negative effects of the 1″ of r++n and have it absorbed into the snowpack. Winds will be dangerous and reports call for widespread power outages. So stay tuned as to status for our planned ski area opening on Thursday as we will have to assess what happens, but power outages for locations here and nearby could take time to restore. Colder temps return on Thursday to lock-in the base across the hill. Fingers-crossed.

How about this one from Friday:
"Lifts: Pfister's crew has been here working on the Quad. Newly found is that one of the towers need a sheave assembly change and working with engineer on that. New wiring for drive system is being connected. Looking to complete and test this month."

Jan 10th 8am: The snowstorm peaked out around 11pm last night with about 8″ at the base stake, probably a little bit more up top. The switchover to rain has continued into the morning but temperatures have peaked at 41 degrees so not as warm as predicted but about an inch of r**n. From the early looks of it this will be net gainer and positive for the base around the mountain as there is still about 5″ at the stake. As temperatures drop thoughout the day into the night when freezing will occur, this denser base should start to lock in on top of the prior snowfall from Sunday.

Thursday we will open at 9am with our Wand to Show Off on the Green Lift and begin to assess further the conditions after the freeze-up on the all-natural terrain for possible expansion for Friday and into the weekend. Snowmaking may be possible to resume for Thursday Night as well up top as well as we look to add the Red Summit lift for MLK weekend!

UPHILL TRAVEL: Closed depending on terrain expansion and assessment of Uphill trail. Groomers are out working and snowmaking equipment is out on the trails

Jan 11th 11am update: The good news is that the all-natural base has frozen up solid. The bad news is that in the short-terms it is not safely skiable as it’s crust right now. The weather on Saturday with new snow on top (3-6″) should help soften it up and make skiable for some more trails as the day goes on. We will also test a groomer pass or two today to see how that works on a lower angle all-natural trail.

Kyle is up with the Yellow Cat getting Upper Magic Carpet down to Medium all set for Red Chair skiing on Friday.
And, Chris is in the Silver Cat with Andrew’s park team to re-build the park set-up for Friday”s ski day and the Night Park on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights!

There’s no real snowmaking temps right now until maybe Friday Night. But that’s also when the next storm comes in. After that it does get cold for a solid week of straight snowmaking!
