Magic Conditions

There are lots of pissed off Magic season pass holders saying they will skip the Magic season pass next season and go for single days or the multipack. Its is only a Thurs-Sun season pass plus holidays.

I'm a pass holder and would say I'm frustrated, not pissed. Magic can't control the weather. That being said, it's January 5 and my first day there will be tomorrow, skiing one mid-mountain run. I'm going to seriously look at other options for next year, with snow making ability at the top of my list. Magic will be low due to a poor snow-making infrastructure.

I'm really not one to compare one hill to another. But! That said, Greek Peak, who's elevation is equal to that of Magic's has been open since Thanksgiving.

I know Greek well (I taught there for 2 years). I agree, the size is similar. Greek obviously enjoys some lake-effect love on occasion. I know Magic is trying to turn the corner regarding snow-,making (they had to deal with Act 250 for years in order to expand their holding pond), but in this day and age you need to be able to blow a ton of snow all over the mountain at the drop of a hat, and they simply don't have that ability, and never will.

I've heard talk that this year is a make-or-break season for the investors. If that's true, the future of Magic is in very grave danger.

100% agree that lack of this capacity makes things really rough for Magic. Can you elaborate on "never will" -- do you mean you can't envision them having the resources to make the required upgrades or is there some hard physical constraint like the volume of available water or something that even money can't overcome?

Do you have a sense of the approximate vertical that was served by the t-bar? Would it be a good place to try uphill for the first time? (Not that I have any immediate plans, but filing away for the future...)
@gregmarx as a nordic skier, I think it would be a great place to try uphill. The lodge is cozy and has lots of character, and good food. People are really nice. You could pump Steve, the manager, about uphill possibilities at the defunct Dutch Hill. He used to work there.

Yes, they simply don't have the water. They expanded the pond, but that only supplies enough for 50% of the mountain. They are always trying to fix/upgrade the piping and guns, but I just don't see them being consistently open in our warmer future.

And again, with no xmas/new year's, and now likely no MLK, that kind of financial hit may be too much for them. I hope I'm wrong. Once I'm actually skiing there, I'll get a better sense from those more connected to ownership.

Gotcha

Makes sense now.

When were you at Greek?

Dutch Hill and Hogback are on my hit list. I actually made it to Hogback a few years ago but tweaked something in my back loading the car that morning and was limited to sampling the bourbon in the distillery that used to be the lodge...

Had planned on getting to Magic on our annual Gore/Pico/Magic skifari in a few weeks but with the Mrs out for the season may not make it unless I do a pit stop on the way back from Jay. Hopefully they get a little help from mother nature over the next few weeks
