Magic Conditions

I've seen plenty of ppl earning their turns at Prospect.
Do you have a sense of the approximate vertical that was served by the t-bar? Would it be a good place to try uphill for the first time? (Not that I have any immediate plans, but filing away for the future...)

According to nelsap.org, Prospect has a 676' vertical drop.

I guess the thing I don't understand is how Stratton and Mount Snow can be relatively OK while Magic is struggling so bad. I know they have much more resources and money and such but at the end of the day, they pretty much have the same weather.
Beyond the elevation issue, the flooding in July caused their holding pond to fill with silt, which meant they couldn't make any snow during the late November/early December window when everyone else did. They didn't have the silt out until late November if memory serves, and by the time the system was charged and ready, the weather turned far too warm.

Its a good spot to try out BC gear for $25, plus there is a old school lodge with food. The skintrack is straight up the t-bar line. The best routes down are skiers left.

January 2, 2024: Happy New year! We re-open next weekend on Saturday at 8:30 as we expand to the Green Lift. Snowmaking will be going whenever possible to add Wand to Show Off although there are zero snowmaking temps during day. After one and half days straight of snowmaking, the guns go silent all day today/tonight and hopefully re-start Wednesday night if it gets cold enough. Also on Saturday, Goon Jams is in the terrain park with fun, competitions and prizes. Registration info is on our events calendar page.

Think cold and snow!

I'd thought Magic was not truly on the Green Mtn spine.

I'm a better student of NY snowfall (vs VT). Does anyone know if Stratton and Mt Snow get more snow? Looks like it on the map.

Stratton's probably 110"-140"/per season vs 80"-120" at Magic mostly due to elevation. The last 5 years have been on a lower snow trend at both areas. Stratton main base is about 2150ft elevation, midstation is about 2700ft elevation and the top is about 3875ft elevation. The Magic base is about 1400ft elevation and the top is about 2850ft elevation.

Magic is 9 miles NE of Stratton as the crow flies and Stratton is about 10 miles east from the Taconics west of Manchester, VT. There is a huge elevation change from the Taconics west of Manchester, from Mt Equinox at 3855ft down to Manchester at 900ft and back up to Stratton Mtn at 3875ft. Magic does not have the benefit of this type of uplift.

Bromley, Stratton, and Mount Snow are all in a line north to south. Magic is a bit to the east, more or less on a line south from Okemo.

I haven't had a chance to ski at Magic but I've driven around the area a bunch in both summer and winter. To get from Bromley to Londonderry, where Magic is based, you basically drive steadily downhill for 10 minutes. I think you tick back up a little bit from the center of Londonderry to Magic but not much.

January 4, 2024: We re-open this weekend on Saturday at 8:30 as we expand to the Green mid-mtn chairlift with Wand down to Show Off. These will be intermediate-level trails. Beginners/novices can use the beginner area or terrain park slope. After tonight, some snowmaking will be shifted to Upper Mountain for adding Red Chair next week. Also on Saturday, Goon Jams is in the terrain park with fun, competitions and prizes and the terrain park will be open for Night Park action from 4-7p. Registration info for Goon Jam is on our events calendar page. Late Saturday Night into Sunday we expect 5-7″ of snow to start adding base across the mountain!

Think cold and snow!

UPHILL TRAVEL: Closed until further notice depending on terrain expansion
