Magic Conditions

Dec 21 4pm Update: Snowmaking continued on upper mountain last night and today, along with terrain park and beginner area. Tonight, with colder temps the guns will be moved down to Show Off to start laying down snow there. Unfortunately these things take time and we are beginning to run out of it with cold weather.

Magic will not be open for skiing lift-served this weekend and its even a long shot for Christmas Week starting on Tuesday it seems with the weekend warming up. There is a possibility of some marginal temps on Saturday and Sunday nights, but it’s close. No matter what, the beginner learning area will be open with lessons on 12/26. A long shot chance for more, but our snowmaking team will keep at it every opportunity they get.

Dec 22 1:30pm: Snowmaking continues from overnight on Show Off, the Terrain Park slope, and the Nelson Family Learning Area. The cold window ends tomorrow morning and there is still much to cover tonight as we start to get some snow down on Wand into Show Off. There is just not enough time before the warmth returns to connect all this for 12/26. So the plan is to open both the Learning Area for beginners, kids and lessons and the handle two lift on the terrain park slope for general skiing/riding, plus 3- rail mini-park section at 10am-4pm on the 26th the day after Christmas on 12/26. We’ll know more about snowmaking progress after tomorrow’s (Saturday) system shut down late in the morning and update everyone. The ticket office will open up at 9am for pass pick-up and tickets.

Magic is a fraud.
That's a bit strong, no? While I understand what they did with the snow they've made this week (opening the learning area for never-ever lessons and some of the "terrain park" so kids can use it), it's frustrating as a pass holder. If they had blown Show Off and opened red today, I would be there right now lapping that.

They have to try to make some kind of money this week though, so good luck to them. Hopefully the rest of us can enjoy the mountain beginning in January.

How does a ski mountain operator get connected with potential rental customers? I assume that businesses planning a teambuilding experience don't immediate think -- "hey, let's rent a ski area for the day!"
I think that used to be true but (at least in Plattekill’s case) they’ve slowly built up awareness over the years through normal advertising channels- an announcement on their website/social media, articles in various publications and plain old posters posters hung up around the lodge. So when the boss starts talking about whatever they did last year, the one person in the room who has been to Plattekill says “hey, you know what might be fun?”

Dec 23 12:30pm: After making snow last night into today, we have had to shut down the system until perhaps next friday given the warm-up in temps all week. We will be doing a limited ski opening in our Nelson Family Learning area with the conveyor lift as well as the terrain park slope handle tow area for additional skiing and riding on Tuesday December 26th from 10a-4p and all that holiday week. Tickets for just those lifts will be available online. The ticket office opens on Tuesday at 9am.

Once snowmaking temps return hopefully next Friday night, we will work on finishing a way down from the summit or mid lift perhaps by Sunday and Monday of New Year’s weekend. Think cold and think snow!

Maybe a tad. How about they are the Minnesota Vikings of the ski industry

First, I guess it helps if you are only a weekend business.

Second, it helps to have been doing it for many years, since many (most?) rentals are repeat.

Third, I think it helps if you are awesome like Plattekill.

I think also, there is this idea that when you rent the mountain, it will just be your people and there will be no lift lines. It's true, but it is also true every other day too.

Seriously, these rental groups have a great time and they keep coming back.

I think that getting Black online will really help Magic. They could get to the point where they never have lines either (if they continue to limit capacity) and their reputation as uncrowded will grow.
