Have you ever had your gear stolen?

Back in the 90s at Hunter I had a pair of skis taken off the rack by someone else at lunch time, they left their similar skis near by. Eventually got them back, nothing stolen.

My son had a nice pair of Leki Spitfire Vario poles stolen at Whiteface last year. Pure theft, mid afternoon someone scooped them up and stole them. Distinctive poles, no mixing them up, no similar poles left nearby.

A few years ago my daughter had poles taken at Whiteface also, Bear Den. When everything was gone at the end of the day there was a pair of rental poles abandoned by where her poles were. Mix up? Maybe....but her poles weren’t turned into the rental shop, so who knows.

Bottom line, while having something stolen just sucks, you have no one to blame but yourself. I grew up always separating my skis/poles. Then I got a lock. Over the years you become complacent, stop separating/locking, my kids never got in the habit....then boom! Just separate or lock up your shit, we do now.

This is similar or the same to what's used when necessary.
Now if I can just remember what number I set it at to open...
Perfect..

Oh, no no no. I had one of them. The combo sort of broke, couldn't open it at the base of, I forget, somewhere, so I walk over to the ticket window and borrow a small pair of wire cutters that you use to snip wickets and plastic tie ons. Snip, no problem. I laughed. What a piece of junk.

Thought that would do it but hadn’t tried.
Thieves might not want to work that hard or they’d get a real job.

Yes you can snip them..but most won't risk doing that in public..I used to carry a really thick one in a small pack for the Wagners..but that was a pain. I just try to lock them or any ski where I can see them..or at least in a place where someone may not want to screw around with wire cutters.
Until I get the lock for my truck bed , I lock them back there too.

Hate to labor this thing, but, the wire cutter I used fit in the palm of my hand. It was so fast. No problem. Just wear ski clothes, don't look suspicious, snip, off to the parking lot.

Benny seems to know a lot about this, maybe you could teach a class? :devilish:

The lock would stop the person who didn't PLAN to come to the mountain to steal skis. Maybe just inspired at the moment.

Also could slow down the drunks who take your skis by accident.

A lock will keep and honest man honest

I go home when I'm done skiing, change into my street clothes, then go back to the bar
