West Mountain Conditions

They could tap people who will use this as there primary residence. Glens Falls is a well located metro area plus there is easy access to outdoor activities. Having skiing right out your door is just another version of the golf or lake community. I think it is an interesting idea.

The pure lack of housing will make this work. Housing market is tight in this area. Plus it’s a nice area to live.

there isn’t a “true ski-and-stay experience” in New York.

Pretty predictable conditions today; scraped off trails with some edgeable stuff on the sides. Race trails were better, for sure. Hope to see them open up more soon and that the incoming warm weather doesn’t delay that…

First day at West this year after grappling with a heat issue at my house this morning. Conditions were pretty good considering the year they have had, with only a little of their trademark concrete ice. Only two ways down today from main chair, with a big racing meet taking the most southerly way down. They were blowing a lot of snow which was a little annoying given the temps already made it challenging enough, but you can’t really blame them given the forecast and that there were probably 30 people skiing besides racers - I lasted a little over two hours and 10 runs. They were advertising opening the north side today, but probably put it off for a day given temps and opted for another day of snowmaking.

I hope they have a strong Feb and March - January was rough.

I got a 6-pack and a sizable gift card to West for Xmas. Haven't gone yet as I want the north chair opened first. Love me some AOA and Midway during the week.

I spent a few hours at West this afternoon, using my first Indy Pass day there (and 7th redemption overall on the season), and marking my first visit there since January 2020. They only got about 3 inches in this underachieving storm, but all after grooming, so it made things really nice. I didn't get on snow until just after noon, but there were still plenty of fresh tracks and apparently the main lift to the summit had a delayed opening. The surface skied into a nice packed powder with (very light) skier traffic. The exception was the Face where snow guns were going in what were marginal snowmaking temperatures at best, so things got a little heavy and sticky there, especially by comparisons to the great surfaces everywhere else. The Northwest area was open, but only Mach and Bannister. Midway was closed with snowmaking (giant whales) and AOA looks to have enough snow to be skiable but was closed. Various glades looked skiable too, but were all roped off. Cure looked very nice but was closed as fencing was being put up on the sides of the trail, meaning only greens and blues open.

As we got to mid-afternoon, the lingering light snow became more of a freezing mist, and then the busloads of kids arrived, so that was it for the day.

Other than the limited terrain, my only real complaint on the day was the lack of effort by the lift operators in clearing snow off chairs. Even after 2:00 there were still chairs coming down with the previous night's snow on the Northwest lift. Fortunately it was so uncrowded that we could just wait until we saw one coming that had been reasonably cleared.
