Total Solar Eclipse coming to NY: April 8, 2024

Where are you going to watch it?
Some fishing hole in a swamp with water moving thru it & just watch & listen to the other animals.
Or maybe in a yak somewhere else if it ain’t windy. The fishing around Oswego Harbor is great that time of year for spring browns (sometimes salmon) but traffic (cars & boats) could be a zoo with the eclipse...
Totality's path goes overhead at home for a bit.
Gonna sample the biosystem if they’re 🐟 biting.

Not sure yet. Staying in Schroon Lake then driving north, northwest towards the center of totality but staying off the Northway.

i'm gonna get absolutely roasted for this ....but is this eclipse a big deal ??
I am really surprised by all the hype and planning around it.
ok - admittedly, I am lame and hate crowds.
I am shocked by the potential amount of people that could flock up north.
I would have to think that Monday night going south on the Northway is going to be a mess.
Don't worry it is going to snow that day.

i totally agree...like ive said before it's watching it get dark during the day for 10 mins...during the summer we have a ton of these days ..when strong thunderstorms pass over head...

Uh, no. Solar corona, diamond ring, bright red solar flares, shadow bands just before and after.

I don't try to persuade skeptics to spend big $$ chasing. But when the cost in $ is minimal, it's one or maybe two days of your time, and it will never be as cheap or convenient the rest of your lifetime, why would you not give it a shot?

So Tony... I have my lodging nearby, I'm just barely in the zone. If I thought I could see something cool in my neighborhood, I'd hike up to the Balm of Gilead cliffs, maybe 900 feet of vert and the end of my street.

I'm just looking for a hill in the zone.

So here's my question:

How far north and west would you drive, if you were me, looking for a hill?

Indian Lake is about 12 miles north and west. Should I go farther? Blue Mountain Lake is about 30 miles.

It’s a lot closer to the edge of totality than the base.
Closer for an total solar eclipse is like being in the parking lot for the Super Bowl and not inside the stadium. You might as well be at home hundreds of miles away.

I cannot emphasize more what a debacle Gore is creating for itself. Somebody with credibility needs to head off this disaster in the making. We can whine about Whiteface or Jay shutting down lifts or not letting people take skis up, but at least the people at those places will experience the total eclipse, weather permitting.

NY DOT talking like eclipse traffic is gonna be as bad as traffic for the Woodstock Festival.

You are asking the wrong question. Being on a hill makes a difference only if you are thousands of feet above the horizon, as we were in Jackson in 2017. The most important factors are the weather, the weather and the weather. You must look at the forecast a couple of days ahead, THEN decide where you are going. Pretend you are chasing a lake effect storm to Snow Ridge. If Snow Ridge was getting 3 feet and Gore nothing, would you stay at Gore? That's a precise analogy to Gore being cloudy during the eclipse while someplace on Lake Ontario or in Vermont has clear skies.
