Total Solar Eclipse coming to NY: April 8, 2024

There is a legit question in what I asked.

If it's cloudy whatever. I don't care about it as much as you.

I was wondering, yes or no — assuming it's clear — if you are 5 miles inside the edge, does driving 30 miles towards the middle help avoid a crevice on the moon.

Otherwise, I give up.

How far north and west would you drive
In terms of length of totality you should be closer to the center line than to an edge. In the area north of Gore, centerline gets 3 minutes 26 seconds totality while halfway to centerline (Long Lake, Mt. Marcy) get 3 minutes 3 seconds. A quarter of the way to centerline at Indian Lake gets 1 minute 56 seconds. All of this pales in importance compared to the weather.

Sorry yes you do. I have been to 15 of them and the clouded out one in 2019 wasn't much different than the 99% scenario at Gore (no solar corona, diamond ring, solar flares, shadow bands, etc.). I really don't understand why people who have never seen one continue to insist that 99% or total cloud cover is OK.

it's watching it get dark during the day for 10 mins...during the summer we have a ton of these days ..when strong thunderstorms pass over head...
JW ya like to fish. Fish turn on during a warm thunderstorm in the spring time. Fish turn on at dawn and dusk too.

Ya know anybody who ever went fishing during an eclipse? If so, what was their feedback?

If it’s sunny ya get to experience something extra special too.

About six inches isn’t too much to ask in my opinion. I’d take that over some low rent eclipse any day.
If it snows enough I’ll hike up the hill behind the house that faces NW where ya can see a long way & see what the animal tracks do. I’ve caught fish in the finger lakes & The Big O in a boat when it’s snowing but not as many stream fishing in a snowstorm.

Sorry no I don't.

I like going to my cabin. I go there dozens of times a year, even when there is no eclipse.

If one of the times I go, I see an eclipse... cool. If it's cloudy I'll be ok.

So that applies also to the 3 foot dump at Snow Ridge scenario with nothing at Gore? Actually I'm quite sure that's true.

Harvey and I are exact opposites in vacation mentality. I would never own a vacation home because I wouldn't want to be tied to the same place especially for skiing. That's why I skied Beaver Mt., UT yesterday, longest tenure of same family ownership ski area in America. It was my 285th ski area and Liz' 223rd.

When chasing eclipses in offbeat areas of the world we always spend considerable time in those places for other new experiences. It's an expensive hobby. Thus we exhort readers of this forum to seize the day, make the effort to utilize the weather reports and spend the very modest amount of time and $$ necessary for this bucket list experience when you are as conveniently located as NY skiers are this time.

The fishing around Oswego Harbor is great that time of year for spring browns (sometimes salmon) but traffic (cars & boats) could be a zoo with the eclipse...
Yup. Rochester too.

Not sure exactly but 6 or 7 years ago the big hype of the eclipse in the west was on. Stanley Idaho was the epicenter. Stores bought extra stuff, restaurants looked for more help. The hype was on….. then nothing happened! No one showed up.
