Total Solar Eclipse coming to NY: April 8, 2024

I get the attraction of skiing the same day... , but if these ski areas are going to shut their lifts down at 2PM, what's the point? Isn't the idea to be ON the mountain? If they force you to The bottom line is that any of you who know marketing directors or other management people at thse ski areas need to reach out NOW. Explain that people want to be ON the mountain and that it will only be "dark" for 5-6 minutes. Shutting everything down at 2PM is ridiculous.
Yup.
Seems ORDA has more marketing “ideas".
125 folk limit at the Little WF (Gondi walkers).
Still shutting lifts at 2.
Can watch a “live feed” in the ice arena on the jumbo-thingy🍺.
It should be a better live view from the tippy top of of the ski jump if it’s sunny.

Prolly gonna watch the eclipse from the parking lot at Dewey Mt. Pray for clear weather.

Whatbout fish?
Eyeballs detect light (electromagnetic radiation) & the brain figures it.

Fish respond to light at different depths & conditions.

Gonna go fishing. The surface of the earth is 3/4 H2O.

If dead set upon skiing, you can easily reach Whiteface or Sugarloaf (2 minutes, 23 seconds)...

Sugarloaf says, "The lifts will be temporary closed from around 3:10 to just after 3:30 to allow everyone to enjoy the total eclipse."

Harvey, here's an opportunity for you to use your visibility in the NY ski world to organize an effort to prevent ORDA from shooting itself in the foot at both Gore and Whiteface next April. As one addicted to both skiing and eclipses, I totally get the attraction of the "twofer" on the same day. But the plans as stated now by the ski areas are a deterrent, along with the weather prospects.
I should call ORDA and tell them to cancel? I can't see them listening to me.

Not spinning the lift at WF is something I missed.

How important is it to be on top of something?

For ski mountains, it’s why folks build lifts and rope tows.
Gravity has effects. YMMMV.
&
For scenic viewing pleasure, ya can see farther higher up if it ain’t foggy.

Eclipse gonna be smack dab in the middle of mud season. Ampersand and St Regis mountains might provide good viewing but summits are a long way in. People could try the WF toll road, but prolly a mile or so from the toll gate before you get a view. Preliminary plan here is Dewey Mountain's parking area. Possibly the stadium at van Ho.

If you look through a camera is it damaging to your eyes?

Through an optical viewfinder, yes, and very dangerous if the image is magnified. Not dangerous through a video screen, but if the camera is aimed at the Sun during the partial phase for an extended time the camera sensor will be damaged. And partial eclipse photos won't be any good with so much glare anyway. That means you need a solar filter for the camera during the partial phases. The Baader solar film can used with a homemade cardboard cutout to fit over the camera lens.

This is the appropriate time to post the scientific explanation of the brightness difference between a partial and total solar eclipse:

The full scientific explanation from astrophysics professor Jay Pasachoff:
Since the sun is about 400,000 times brighter than the full moon (about 14 magnitudes), a 99% eclipse (so termed) is about 4,000 times too bright compared with totality, which is about the brightness of the full moon. So a "99% eclipse" is really only 100/400,000 = 1/4,000 = 1/40% of totality = 0.025%.
To connect the dots here, the solar corona during totality is about as bright as a full moon.
People who think a 99% eclipse will get you 99% of the experience will be susceptible to Gore's promotion if they are still hosting an event. Harvey, I still think this is on you to head off this potential debacle. Feel free to have them contact me or a known scientific authority if they resist.
