Total Solar Eclipse coming to NY: April 8, 2024

100% true...but from a planning and viewing time ...seems like more bang for the buck...
How far in advance do you know about northern lights?

I saw them while camping in northern Quebec and they were gorgeous -- hearing wolves howling in the distance made it even better. But you haven't seen a full-totality eclipse, right?
Wonder if ya could see the lights in the sky from the magnetic earth when it goes “dark” during the eclipse for a few minutes. Might still be too bright out.
Maybe @TonyC knows.
edit: It won’t be dark enough to observe.
Best northern lights I ever observed was after a wedding on top of McCauley when we went out later that night on a pier on 4th lake near Inlet. Leaves were peak color too.

you don't ..some night are better, and of course weather dependent ..Iceland is just a example..any high latitude location usually works..

best time to see the northern lights in Iceland is in winter. Northern lights tours run in Iceland throughout the winter season, from September to April. That's because this is when nights are dark and long, giving you the best conditions to see this incredible display

There’s different colors and shimmering. Electromagnetic energy from the sun gets in the outer atmosphere around the earth’s poles & energizes it.
❤️ Scottie McRobbie’s astrology class at Potsdam.
He’s retired now but saw he won Fireman of the Year in Colton, NY.

Over my two summers in AK, I saw them a bunch of times but it was always in September as nights seemed to be getting 10- 20 minutes longer every day. Best one was on the Alaska Highway way up in the Yukon on the trip home at the end of my first season. Any aurora was beautiful and amazing but this one was next level. It filled the entire horizon, rolling by in ribbons, speeding up, slowing down, greens, purple… just mind blowing. Way better than an eclipse. Not even close.

Mine didn't quite reach ^^ that level but was pretty impressive -- reminded me of Blue Oyster Cult's 1978 laser show!
