The Storm Skiing Journal comes down hard on ORDA

Cough Cough $80 million -
"The final price tag for New York taxpayers was around $80 million, ORDA spokesperson Elise Ruocco confirmed this month. That’s nearly double the $40-50 million estimate ORDA gave in February 2019, which had risen to $60 million by the time site work began that June. Since that time, ORDA’s board approved several change orders for unforeseen expenses at Van Hoevenberg costing at least $2.75 million."

This stuff should be Federally funded, not NYS funded, but then the locals who benefit would have no power.
That’s some crazy info in that article. Any chance the Olympics will return?

Wasn’t there some talk about trying to do an international one?
There is not enough of everything - access, beds, facilities, etc. This is why they need to have most of the winter olympics based out of cities - Sochi, Turin, Nogano, Vancouver, Calgary, Salt Lake City, and now Beijing.

Long odds the Olympics would ever return to Lake Placid. Even in some kind of shared arrangement... someone floated the idea of a Quebec City / LP Olympics a few years ago. The International Olympic Committee wants glamorous urban locales.

A biathlon or cross-country World Cup meet, on the other hand, is definitely in the realm of possibility IMO.

"New York State has invested more than $300 million so far in facilities that will be in place in Lake Placid for the World University Games next winter."

Ski orienteering? That’s cool. What’s e-sports all about?

Olympics are international.
Wouldn’t be hard to beat the venues for the 2022 games.
2026 will be in Northern Italy & Tirol.
Better food and prettier places.
It actually snows too in the Alps, so there’s that.

Um, yeah. Cortina is far from any sort of glamorous "city" mentioned above. (Beijing?? Glamourous? Sochi? Really?) Its a real ski town with a long history hosting WC events. Now, Milan, hours away, will probably be a media base and is hosting indoor events, but, at least it's got great food and fashion. Doubtful we'll be seeing nuclear plant cooling towers as a backdrop for certain events. Who the hell approved that?

The IOC, hopefully, is reeling from the horrible look of these Olympics. Just awful. Beyond the human rights issues, which has to make even a few dictators cringe, holding alpine events in a place where IT NEVER SNOWS is about as bad as it gets. (Disclaimer: I haven't watched a second, except for a night of curling a friend was glued to. But, I gave up on the Olympics a long time ago.) I am confused at the statements above that LP will never host another Olympics. Why? Especially after this debacle.
