Oh, please read this book before you go.Anyone ever hike the Grand Canyon Rim-to-Rim? I have a 2 day (one night) permit pending and need to commit in the next few days. Just wondering exactly what I'd be getting myself (and son) into...

Just read it after a southern Utah national park trip. Found it in the Bryce bookstore. The authors have quite the resumes. Ghilgeri has done well over a hundred raft trips in GC. He was my lead guide when I rafted the canyon in '86. Myers is an extreme hiker in there and has years of experience in rescue and medical response there. May sound like a morbid read, but is actually kind of entertaining and very eye opening. You can die in many ways within the park, but chapters one to three should be required reading for your trip. Falls, and "environmental" causes. There are specific incidents they go into detail about when hikers die. Dehydration is probably the number one cause. It quickly screws with your head, and then you make a fatal decision or two Carry A LOT of water, and, yes, you can actually drink too much water. It happens.
October is smart. Never in summer.
Some rafters just got killed by flash floods hitting their campsites. That happens a lot. That is a gruesome way to die.
Great book. Good luck. Buddy of mine has done it twice, north to south. Alone!
If I was to train, I'd climb one of the steep mountains in the Daks, at least 3000 feet, with a full backpack. Maybe five to ten times.
