ORDA's Biggest Wins

One thing I give ORDA credit for...

Generally they stay open until the snow is gone, or the mountain is unski-able. This is a Mike Pratt thing, and I approve.

From a recent Mike Pratt interview.
"At Gore, we had quite a streak going of more lift days every year, the same amount of snow made every year, making it in less hours in every year and having it for less kilowatt hours every single year. These efficiency challenges and opportunities, our specifications for our infrastructure and the way we’ve rebuilt our facilities has been great."

In the past, they did not make as much snow as others, so while they'd keep patching things together until they couldn't connect anymore, they would end up closing around the same time. Now they make more snow, so they're among the latest to close.

Isn't it more that ORDA/NYS doesn't have to weigh the cost of staying open vs. likely revenue as much as a private mountain?

I was making a micro point, not a macro point, ignoring the big picture. I like the idea of spinning lifts until the snow is gone. Those are great days on the bumps of Chatiemac in April. They make me smile, that's all I was saying.

I grant that ORDA has the luxury of (some) freedom from market forces.

The above comment extends to the entire operation, not just closing date. The bigger issue is capex. Compared to private mountains ORDA has some big advantages. Compared to other NY state spending, ORDA is relatively small peanuts. They also have challenges that other mountains don't have. The decision making process is complex and generally the biggest decisions aren't made by ops.
